Και οι απορίες ηταν πολλές και τεράστιες για το τι συνέβει φέτος στον αλβαριτο

GOODBYE, HONDA! HELLO, APRILIA!

Is former 125cc World Champion Alvaro Bautista finally on a path to MotoGP success?

Alvaro Bautista has traded his satellite Honda for a factory Aprilia, and he couldn’t be happier. The 30-year-old Spaniard finished 11th overall in MotoGP points, well off a promising fifth the previous year. When I asked Bautista about his up-and-down season, he immediately corrected me.

“Up, down, down, down, down,” he said. “After last season being so competitive, fighting every race for fourth or fifth place, many times with Valentino Rossi, I expected more from this season.”

At the first of two pre-season tests last February in Malaysia, riding an updated RC213V on new-spec Bridgestone tires, Bautista was just outside the top 10, a little more than a second slower than Marc Marquez, who headed every session.

“We changed the bike—frame and everything—to one that was developed with Öhlins and Brembo,” Bautista said. “So we struggled a bit at the beginning, but, okay, in Qatar, we were so competitive.”

Riding the only works Honda equipped with Showa suspension and Nissin brakes, Bautista qualified for that first race on the front row, between Marquez on pole and Yamaha Tech3’s Bradley Smith. He crashed two laps from the end while contesting third ahead of Dani Pedrosa.

“We had some problems with the brakes at the first race in Qatar,” Bautista said. “In Austin, we tried Brembo for one practice. The brake character has to go with the suspension character, so when we put on Brembo, something was wrong. The character of Brembo is smoother, but the suspension didn’t use all the stroke. It was quite difficult to resolve in just one weekend.

Nissin worked to make the brakes a bit better, especially more consistent. After that, I didn’t have problems with the brakes. I don’t know if my suspension is better or worse because I have no reference. I can’t compare my data with Marc or Dani.”

Bautista also crashed at Circuit of The Americas and again in Argentina, then qualified sixth and raced to eighth at Jerez. At Le Mans, following a come-from-behind run, he stood on the podium—his first since 2012—with Marquez and Rossi.

Bautista wasn’t able to replicate that performance at Mugello, where he finished eighth. At Catalunya, he fell again, his fourth DNF in just seven races. But the real turning point of the season came at the next round in Holland.

“At Assen,” Bautista said, “we changed to a frame that Dani and Marc used in the first races of the season. But the switch was a bit strange. In FP1, HRC said to me, ‘Okay, you can try. If you like, you can keep.’

“I compared both frames but no big difference. When FP1 finished, HRC said, ‘Okay, you have to decide right now. Yes or no.’ I did not feel a big difference, but in FP1, you are not at your maximum. So we decided to keep that frame and start to work on it.”

Half-dry, half-wet conditions in Holland and again two weeks later in Germany meant Bautista couldn’t explore the dry-track potential of the new chassis until after the summer break at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. That’s when Bautista understood he was in trouble. His best finish in the remaining rounds was sixth at Phillip Island, a race in which several big names hit the deck.

“From Indianapolis,” he said, “we were struggling more. The frame was too rigid, and in combination with my suspension, it didn’t work so good. We compared all the data with last year, and tire temperature was 10 degrees [Celsius] colder than last year. We tried to change, but it was not possible.”

According to Bautista, his conversation with HRC went like this:

“I can’t make the tire work.”

“This is your bike.”

“Okay, but I don’t feel the rear tire.”

“That’s your problem.”

Bautista was not surprised by Honda’s response. “I remember in 2005,” he said, “I raced with Honda and Showa in the 125cc class. It was a big, big disaster. The next year I switched to Aprilia, and I won the championship. This year, I never received support from HRC. Last year, more or less, they were pushing to help us. But this year, no.”

When I asked Bautista about returning to Aprilia, he beamed. “Yeah, I smile!” he said. “Next year will be important for Aprilia to get the maximum information to make a completely new bike for 2016. For sure it will be a big challenge because we will change tires and all of the bikes will use the same electronics. Now we have two categories, MotoGP and Open. In 2016, we will have one, like Moto2 and Moto3.”

The bike that Bautista and his new Factory Aprilia Gresini teammate, Marco Melandri, tested in Valencia was a hybrid, a twin-beam aluminum chassis fitted with Öhlins suspension, Brembo carbon brakes, and Bridgestone tires, and powered by an RSV4 RR Superbike engine.

“The power is not enough to be competitive with the other bikes,” Bautista admitted, “but I am happy with the character of the engine. I’m looking forward to the next test because we will use the new engine. Maybe I don’t win the championship but to have a good feeling and ride like I want, and can, is my target for next year.”

Ακόμα και να μην έχεις συνδρομή, μπορείς να δεις ποια είναι τα διαθέσιμα βίντεο/μεταδόσεις. Απλά όταν πατήσεις play, δεν σε αφήνει.
